Finding a new home

Show all parts of this guide

1. Housing applications

If remaining in your current home isn't an option, then the next pages will help with:

  • finding out if renting a council and housing association home is an option
  • registering and bidding for a council and housing association property

If you are living in an unsuitable home you may be able to gain priority on the Devon Home Choice scheme. They will assess your need for social housing. As demand far outweighs supply, the possibility of securing social housing in Exeter may be unlikely unless you have a high need.

We've had tenants on the housing register tell us that they would have considered other options earlier, such as moving into private rented accommodation in cheaper areas, had they known the unlikelihood of being housed. Regarding being rehoused, tenants said they would have considered downsizing or swapping homes had they known the unlikelihood.
