The Roman Forum, Basilica & Curia

The basilica and forum were at the heart of the Roman town, providing both an administrative centre and a market area. The forum consisted of a rectangular open market place surrounded on three sides with shops. On the fourth side was the basilica, the equivalent of our town hall, in which justice would have been administered in a room named the curia and where local officials would meet in an open hall. At Exeter much of the basilica was excavated in 1971-6, and parts of the other ranges have been uncovered in smaller post-war excavations.
