Funerals with a funeral director

T Trees Using a funeral director

Most people organise a funeral through a funeral director.

We have a list of Approved Funeral Directors These are funeral directors who meet strict criteria of service and insurance.

You can use a funeral director who is not on the list subject to our approval.

Professional membership

Many funeral directors are members of a professional organisation such as the National Association of Funeral Directors or the Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors  which also require their members to meet agreed standards.

You do not have to use a funeral director at all. For information on organising your own funeral see Funerals without a funeral director

You should be aware that the person who organises the funeral is liable for the costs.

What a funeral director should offer

Funeral directors should offer

  • A price for a basic funeral
  • Itemised costs (for funerals other than basic funerals). These might include professional services, removal of the body, a coffin or casket, vehicle charges and other services.

Funeral directors should offer you support and advice in choosing the funeral that is most suitable for you. It may be that you wish to provide some elements of the funeral yourself.

Some funeral directors offer the opportunity to prepay your funeral or to take out insurance.
