Fishing & Fishing Licences
Free coarse fishing is available on the Exeter Canal between the Basin and Double Locks. Permits can be obtained at Reception in the Civic Centre. An Environment Agency Game Rod Licence will also be required. The rest of the Canal can be fished with an Exeter & District Angling Association permit, which is available from the Angling Centre, Smythen Street, Exeter.
Rod Licences can be purchased from any Post Office in England and Wales on their telephone sales line 0870 1662662 (for Full & Junior licences only). Twelve year olds and under do not need a rod licence but do need a free city permit.
As an angler it is most important for you to know that anyone aged 12 years or over who fishes for salmon, trout, freshwater fish or eels in England and Wales must have an Environment Agency Rod Fishing Licence.
A rod licence is a statutory requirement (in other words it is required by law) and entitles the licensee to use a rod and line to fish. Rod licences are issued by the Environment Agency. They differ from permits (often referred to as tickets or day tickets) which give permission to fish a particular water or waters and are issued by fishery owners, angling clubs and so on.
Rod licences can be purchased from any Post Office in England and Wales, on our telephone sales line: 0870 1662662 (for Full and Junior licences only).
The Environment Agency offers an on-line licensing facility for Full, Junior, 8-day and 1-day licence categories.
