Edwardian and Heritage graves

Higher Ashworth Higher Cemetery  has been open since 1866 and there are now few new graves available. We are therefore responding to this by offering innovative services. These include Edwardian graves and the Garden of Remembrance for the burial of ashes which was opened in 2008.

Edwardian graves are located in an attractive historic section of Higher Cemetery surrounded by mature trees. The area was previously used for burial by the Victorians and Edwardians who buried deep in the ground.

The graves in the area have no existing memorials and it is many decades since they were last visited. The graves are not being 'reused' because the layout and size of the graves are different from the pattern in use before World War One.

The graves are dug to single depth only but there is space for several sets of ashes as well. For those who want a double grave, we can offer two graves side by side for a small additional charge.

We still have a small number of Heritage triple depth graves at Higher Cemetery. These are unused graves that were reserved many decades ago but never used. These are generally path side graves and are available at a premium price.

The type of memorial you may have on an Edwardian or Heritage grave is restricted to one that will fit in with the memorials already in the area. Modern, highly polished lawn memorials are not permitted. Your stonemason will be able to advise you on what can be installed. We especially welcome individually designed memorials in these sections.

Because of the individual nature of these graves we strongly recommend visiting the cemetery before making a final decision. Please contact us to make an appointment and a member of staff will be happy to show you round.

Edwardian and Heritage graves are available at Higher Cemetery.
