Pub and club landlords and people living nearby licensed premises can find out more about the new licensing laws by attending a drop-in day organised by Exeter City Council.

The event takes place on 29 April, between 9am and 5pm, at St George's Hall, Market Street, Exeter. Staff from the Council will be on hand to answer any questions relating to the new licensing laws, which come into force later in the year.

The new laws are expected to come into force in November, and the Council must receive applications from licensees by 6 August. At present the Council has received only five applications for extended hours licenses. One - the Barley mow - has been granted and four are currently being processed.

Anyone who supplies alcohol, whether from an off-licensed premises or public house, members' club or night-club, is welcome to attend the drop-in day. Those who provide entertainment in any form, including street theatre or busking or make available food after 11pm at night, may also find it worth attending. The new laws will apply to these people.

The event is also open to people who live nearby licensed premises that may ask for a 24 hour licence and don't know how to make representations against the application. Those whose local pub is looking to stay open for longer, raising concerns about late night disturbance, may want to attend. Or pub or club representatives who may receive complaints from residents about an application that gives them cause for concern, might also find the event useful.

Those attending the event will be able to have an informal chat with Council officers, the Police or Fire Service, about how to go about applying for a license or making an objection.

Those who can't make the event can write to Licensing for more information.
