The European Parliament has members elected from across Europe, including the UK. It is based in Strasbourg and passes regulations and directives that affect everyone in the European Union (EU) from the north of Scotland to the south of Italy and from the borders of Russia to the Atlantic Ocean. It deals with issues such as the environment, human rights, consumer rights and economic development.
The last European Elections were held in June 2009
These elections are held once every five years, the last elections were held in June 2009. Exeter City Council comes under the South West Region. Currently, there are six South West Members of European Parliament (MEP's) in this region. You voted for one candidate party in the south west region – the six candidates with the most votes were then elected as MEP's using the D'Hondt method of proportional representation. The UK the election was administered by a Regional Returning Officer (RRO). In the South West Region, the RRO is Mr. Paul K. Morris.
