Historic Environment Records (HERs) contain background information on archaeological remains, historic buildings and structures, and historic landscapes, parks and gardens. Searching them is a necessary part of carrying out background research for development proposals, and is also beneficial for those undertaking local history studies and academic and other research. The information in them also underpins the advice provided by the city's Archaeology Officer and colleagues. Viewing the recordsThe city council maintains a computerised map-based record for the historic core of Exeter, which contains information on both archaeological remains and historic buildings, and reconstructions of the city's layout through history. Information on Listed buildings throughout the city is also available. Devon County Council currently maintain the record for the outer city district, and this includes information on archaeological remains and on the historic landscape. They have made the Historic Landscape Characterisation available online. For the areas covered by the city and county council HERs and examples of the material held by the city HER you can download the document below.
The city HER can be viewed by prior appointment with the city's Archaeology Officer, and the county HER by appointment with the county historic environment service. Currently no charge is made for visits to the city HER, although copying charges do apply. You can also view an Oasis' online database of limited circulation reports on recent archaeological.
