The Council maintains the two electoral registers for the city of Exeter.
The full register lists everyone who is entitled to vote or will be entitled to vote in the coming year. Anyone can view this list at the Civic Centre during office hours, or at libraries within the city. Regulations require that it can only be inspected under supervision and handwritten copies can only be taken for specific purposes such as elections. Only law enforcement agencies, government departments or credit reference agencies (who undertake identity checks if you apply for credit) can be supplied with a copy. Misuse of the information can be a criminal offence.
The second register is called the open version, which does not have the names or addresses of people who have asked not to be included. Open registers can be inspected by anyone and can be bought for any lawful purpose. There are no rules about supervision and the information can be used for any lawful purpose but there is a charge for any copies taken.
